One year has passed since the football world was devastated by the news that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a car crash in July 2025. The tragic nature of Jota's final Instagram post before the accident remains as poignant as ever.
Jota's Life and Career
Jota, who was 28 at the time of his death, left an indelible mark on Liverpool supporters during his five-year spell at Anfield. He helped the club win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, and also reached the Champions League final. With Portugal, he won two UEFA Nations League titles, the second coming in June 2025 via a penalty shootout victory against Spain.
Final Instagram Post
Shortly after Portugal's Nations League success, Jota went on holiday with his family, where he married his childhood sweetheart, Rute. He marked the occasion in early July with a post that read: "June 22, 2025. Yes to forever [Infinity emoji]." The upload featured intimate wedding footage, with a voiceover saying: "Dear Rute, dear Diogo. This is a day that will mark your lives for the rest of your days. This is the only day that you have been able to get together, at the same time in the same place your family, your friends to celebrate what truly matters, which is love."
Less than 24 hours after that post, news of Jota and his brother's fatal accident emerged. The commemorative video now stands frozen in time as a tribute to what Jota cherished most. On his Instagram page, the wedding compilation remains the first thing visitors see, serving as a fitting memorial.
Family and Legacy
Jota is survived by his wife Rute and their three children: sons Dinis and Duarte, and a daughter born in November 2024. The sons appeared as mascots when Liverpool and Wolves met in December 2025, with Rute present. She has repeatedly expressed gratitude to Liverpool supporters for their outpouring of affection. Portugal's World Cup squad is wearing wristbands bearing Jota's name to honour his memory.
