Bobbi Flood Details Katie Taylor Inspiration Ahead of Boxing Debut
The young Irishman, who makes his professional debut on Saturday night, was left starstruck after witnessing Katie Taylor strike gold at the Olympic Games in 2012. Bobbi Flood will step into the ring for his first paid fight on his 21st birthday in Dublin, marking a significant milestone in his budding career.
A Childhood Moment of Inspiration
Top Irish prospect Bobbi Flood was just a young boy when he took to the streets of Bray, waiting hours just to catch a glimpse of Katie Taylor's crowning moment following her Olympic triumph at London 2012. This experience left a lasting impression on him, fueling his aspirations to become a professional boxer. Flood recalls watching Taylor pass through the streets on a bus, surrounded by Irish flags and cheering fans, which ignited his desire to one day achieve similar recognition.
In the build-up to fight night, Flood has constantly reminded himself 'you only get one debut.' Getting the call to feature on a stacked card at the 3Arena, located just five minutes from his grandmother's house, was an easy decision for the 20-year-old. For as long as he could remember, he has dreamed of lacing up the gloves and turning pro, inspired by the accomplishments of Irish stars like Katie Taylor and Mick Conlan.
Drawing from Irish Boxing Legends
"It was always Katie Taylor and Mick Conlan," he told Mirror Fighting when asked for his inspirations growing up. "The fanbase they had in Ireland and stuff like that and what they’ve achieved. That's obviously what they have achieved if I could achieve that it’d be unreal. I’ve always looked up to them." Flood vividly remembers the communal celebration of Taylor's success, which made him envision a future where he could inspire similar pride and support.
He added, "Katie Taylor coming back from the Olympics with a gold medal. I remember going out to Bray and, waiting there for hours to see her coming through on a bus and stuff like that with all the Irish flags. So imagine one day people doing that for me. It'd be a dream come true, really would." This moment solidified his commitment to boxing and his goal of becoming a champion.
Emotional Debut and Future Ambitions
His first professional outing falls a day before Mother's Day, adding an emotional layer to the occasion. Flood's mother passed away when he was just eight years old, and he made a promise to her that he would make it to the Olympics. However, due to complications over changes in weight classes, he decided to accelerate his move to the professional ranks. Now, he has pledged to deliver a world title to his beloved family, honoring his mother's memory through his achievements in the ring.
Having won 10 national titles and a European Youth gold medal, expectations are high for Flood. He is confident in his abilities and aims to become a world champion within the next five years. "If I can get the right fights, if I prove that I'm good enough in the first couple of fights, I don't see why they won't give me a step up," he explained. "And if I prove again on that step up that I'm good enough to be there, why not take a step up again? And again if we go and prove myself right again, who knows where that will put me in the running for a world title eliminator or something like that in a couple of years?"
Aspiring to Inspire the Next Generation
Beyond personal glory, Flood hopes to use his success to positively impact his community. He comes from an area with challenges, and he wants to inspire younger generations to pursue sports and education. "I'd be more looking forward to inspiring the younger generation when I become a world champion because the area I come up from, it's not a great area," he said. "It's a good, great area for the people, but obviously for crime and stuff like that it wouldn't be great. So I’d love to in a couple of years time really influence them to do better and join a sport and excel in that sport, to like try do your best in the sport, stay in school, all those type of things that gives you a good head start in life."
With his debut set for Saturday night, Bobbi Flood is poised to begin his journey toward fulfilling these dreams, carrying the inspiration of Katie Taylor and a deep personal motivation into the ring.
