Family of Deceased Boxer Seeks Systemic Change Through Inquest
The family of a young boxer who tragically died following a professional bout in Belfast last year has expressed hope that an upcoming inquest will catalyse meaningful safety reforms within the sport. John Cooney, a 28-year-old fighter from Galway, succumbed to his injuries one week after competing in a title fight at Ulster Hall in February 2025.
Medical Details and Legal Proceedings
Cooney sustained an intracranial haemorrhage, commonly referred to as a bleed on the brain, during the clash. He received treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital but did not survive. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday at Belfast Coroner's Court, marking the first step in a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Barry O'Donnell, a solicitor from KRW Law representing the boxer's father, Hugh Cooney, stated that the case raises serious questions about safety protocols in professional boxing. "John's death occurred in circumstances that raise profound concerns about safety practices within professional boxing," O'Donnell emphasised. He highlighted the extreme weight loss Cooney endured before the fight as a particularly grave concern, suggesting it was a contributing factor to the fatal outcome.
Systemic Issues and Human Rights Considerations
The inquest is expected to scrutinise not only the immediate events leading to Cooney's death but also the broader regulatory environment governing the sport. O'Donnell outlined several key areas for examination:
- Whether existing safety measures and medical oversight were adequate

- The sufficiency of regulatory structures governing the sport
- Potential systemic failings that may have contributed to the tragedy
O'Donnell further argued that this case should invoke Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which obliges states to ensure adequate laws and regulatory frameworks for activities that pose life-threatening risks. "We hope the inquest fully examines the regulatory framework governing boxing, including whether the existing systems are fit for purpose and compliant with the state's obligations under Article 2," he stated.
