Daniel Dubois and Don Charles Reunite for Wardley Clash After Unexpected Split

British heavyweight boxer Daniel Dubois and his trainer Don Charles have openly discussed their decision to reunite, following a surprising split that occurred after Dubois's second loss to Oleksandr Usyk. The pair are now back together, preparing for a high-stakes WBO title fight against champion Fabio Wardley in Manchester on 9 May.

Unexpected Separation and Swift Reunion

In July, one month after Dubois suffered a stoppage loss to Usyk at Wembley Stadium, the 28-year-old fighter made the unexpected move to part ways with Charles. This separation came despite Charles overseeing the most successful period of Dubois's career, which included notable victories. Dubois briefly trained with Tony Sims at the Matchroom gym during this interim period, but the reunion with Charles was quickly arranged ahead of the Wardley bout.

In an interview on Sky Sports, Dubois clarified the situation, stating, "No problems with Tony, but this is the best move for my career. Yeah, I'm glad I'm working with Don for this fight." Charles echoed this sentiment, adding, "If it's not broken, don't mend it. From my end, nothing happened. We had a break, and he didn't have no fight in between that break, and he came back home. I'm delighted, I'm happy, and let's get it on."

Chemistry and Career Highlights

When questioned about whether the reunion validates his training methods, Charles emphasized the importance of chemistry, saying, "It could be anything. You know, sometimes the chemistry... Everything was just right. I feel the same way, he feels the same way, and we're back to doing what we do best. I'm really, really happy for this young man, to aid him to go and achieve greatness."

Dubois first began working with Charles in 2023 after splitting from coach Shane McGuigan. Their partnership initially faced a tough challenge in a title shot against Usyk, where the Ukrainian stopped Dubois in the ninth round following a controversial low blow. However, the duo then achieved a remarkable 3-0 record between December 2023 and September 2024, with knockout wins over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and Anthony Joshua.

The victory over Joshua was particularly significant, as Dubois dropped Joshua multiple times and secured a fifth-round knockout to claim the IBF heavyweight title, which had been vacated by Usyk earlier that year. This win set up a rematch with Usyk, who still held other major titles, but Usyk improved on his previous performance by stopping Dubois in the fifth round, becoming a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.

Path to the Wardley Fight

Following the loss to Usyk, Dubois and Charles split, with Charles expressing his disappointment in a November interview with Seconds Out. He referenced "the devil's agents" and stated, "They always manage to infiltrate. They don't like anything good; they like to infiltrate anything good and spoil it. He's been heavily influenced [...] I feel very let down. I feel very sad."

Meanwhile, Usyk vacated the WBO strap in November, one month after Fabio Wardley had stopped Joseph Parker to claim the interim version. Wardley, an unbeaten 31-year-old, was subsequently elevated to official champion and will now defend his title against Dubois at the Co-op Live arena. This bout marks a critical opportunity for Dubois to reclaim championship status, with his renewed partnership with Charles at the forefront of his preparations.

The reunion highlights the dynamic nature of boxing partnerships, where splits and reconciliations can occur rapidly based on career needs and personal chemistry. As Dubois and Charles gear up for the Wardley fight, fans and analysts will be watching closely to see if their renewed collaboration can lead to another championship victory.
