Prominent boxing figure Eddie Hearn has shared a heartfelt tribute following the tragic deaths of two close friends of former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in a devastating road accident in Nigeria.
A Tragic Incident Near Lagos
The fatal collision occurred on Monday when the vehicle carrying British boxer Anthony Joshua, along with his friends Sina Ghami and Latif 'Latz' Ayodele, struck a stationary truck on a major road near Lagos. Ghami and Ayodele both lost their lives in the crash.
Anthony Joshua, who was born in Watford to parents of Nigerian heritage, sustained injuries in the accident. The Ogun State Government has confirmed that the 36-year-old fighter is now stable and conscious in hospital. He was visiting Nigeria on holiday after his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19.
Heartfelt Tributes from the Boxing World
Eddie Hearn, who has promoted Joshua's professional career since his gold medal win at the London 2012 Olympics, took to Instagram to express his grief. He wrote, "Rest in peace Latz and Sina. Your energy and loyalty among so many other great qualities will be deeply missed."
He added, "Praying for strength and guidance for all their family, friends and of course AJ during this very difficult time." The two men were not only long-term companions of Joshua but also key members of his training team; Ghami served as his strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele worked as a trainer.
Global Boxing Community Offers Condolences
The shocking news has prompted an outpouring of support from across the sporting world. Retired cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew posted on X, "Thoughts and prayers to the families of these men. Tragic losses in horrific circumstances!"
Bellew also expressed concern for Joshua's wellbeing, stating, "I hope he is able to process this with time because there is no pain in life worse than grief." In the past 24 hours, condolences have also been offered by other boxing legends including two-time undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, British former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, and former world champion Wladimir Klitschko.
The boxing fraternity now mourns the loss of two valued individuals while wishing Anthony Joshua a full and speedy recovery from his injuries following the horrific car crash.
