Joshua's uncle on family's hospital search after fatal crash

The family of former World Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua endured a frantic search to find him after he was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria on Monday, his uncle has revealed.

Family's Frantic Search for the Boxer

Adedamola Joshua, the boxer's uncle, has spoken of the immense stress and confusion the family faced in the immediate aftermath. He explained that the family was not immediately informed about the incident, which occurred as Joshua was visiting his relatives in Sagamu.

"We did not know on time that he was involved in an accident, it was really a rude shock to the family," Adedamola told journalists in Ijokun. He noted that the timing made the news particularly devastating, coming during the festive period when families gather to celebrate.

Details of the Tragic Accident

The crash, which happened on Monday, 30 December 2025, was caused by a tyre blowout. Tragically, it claimed the lives of two key members of Joshua's team: his personal trainer Latif 'Latz' Ayodele and his sport and exercise rehabilitation coach, Sina Ghami.

Joshua himself was confirmed to be in a stable condition in a hospital in Lagos. However, his high-profile status complicated efforts for his extended family to locate and visit him.

"We have been rallying round to see if it is possible to get to see our son but that has been impossible because of his status," his uncle stated. "We don’t know the hospital he was taken to and we can understand that such is being done to protect him being a world figure."

Community Shock and Family Plea

The news sent shockwaves through the local community in Sagamu, where Joshua has deep family roots and frequently visits. "The sad news actually jolted Sagamu community and up till now everyone is still in shock," Adedamola said.

While the family respects the security protocols, they have made a heartfelt plea. "We are also thinking that it will be fine if they allow even if it just three of the family members to see him," his uncle expressed. "We are all eager to see him but we will still respect the wish of the authority to keep him safe for now."

The boxer's parents, who are also in Nigeria, have been in touch with the wider family and have assured them that Joshua is recovering well.
