Fabio Wardley Crowned British Boxer of the Year After World Title Triumph
Wardley Wins British Boxer of the Year Award

Fabio Wardley Honoured as British Boxer of the Year Following World Championship Success

British heavyweight Fabio Wardley has been named British Boxer of the Year at the annual British Boxing Board of Control Awards, capping a remarkable twelve months that saw him crowned world champion.

From Interim Champion to Full World Title Holder

Wardley's journey to this prestigious award began last October when he secured a stunning come-from-behind stoppage victory over former world champion Joseph Parker to claim the interim heavyweight world title. The dramatic victory showcased Wardley's resilience and punching power, establishing him as a force in the division.

His status was further elevated when undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk relinquished one of his four championship belts rather than defending it against Wardley. This decision automatically promoted Wardley to full world champion status, cementing his place among boxing's elite.

A Humble Champion Credits His Team

At Sunday's awards ceremony, Wardley expressed surprise at receiving the honour. "This is definitely not one I expected to win," he admitted. "I was just immensely proud to even be nominated and to be considered in the first place."

The champion was quick to redirect praise toward his support team. "I know the award says 'Boxer of the Year,' but actually for me, what this award represents is 'Team of the Year,'" Wardley emphasized. He specifically thanked trainer Ben Davison, strategist Lee Wylie, coach Robert Hodgins, strength coach Michael Ofo, and his manager for their contributions.

"Without those guys and without their faith, I wouldn't be on this stage, I wouldn't be in this position," Wardley stated emotionally.

Special Tribute to Longtime Coach

Wardley reserved particular praise for his coach Robert Hodgins, describing him as "more than a coach, an annoying friend, the guy I can't get rid of, can't seem to get away from!"

He highlighted their unique journey together: "Me and Rob have literally started from the ground up. The first time I ever put on a pair of gloves, that man was the one that laced them up for me, and now as a world champion, he was the guy that laced up those gloves for me. So this one's for you, Rob!"

Upcoming Title Defence and Other Award Winners

Wardley will defend his world championship belt against former world champion Daniel Dubois in Manchester on May 9, in what promises to be a significant domestic showdown.

The awards ceremony also recognised other boxing talents. Rising star Moses Itauma was named Young Boxer of the Year, while Ben Davison—who trains both Wardley and Itauma—received Trainer of the Year honours.

Oleksandr Usyk was named Overseas Boxer of the Year, and retired former undisputed world champion Josh Taylor was recognised for his career achievements. The thrilling first encounter between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr last April was awarded Contest of the Year.

Wardley's award caps an extraordinary period for the British heavyweight, who has risen from relative obscurity to world champion status within a few short years, demonstrating the power of dedication, teamwork, and raw talent in the demanding world of professional boxing.
