Pat Cummins Ruled Out of Second Ashes Test as Australia Name Unchanged Squad
Cummins out of second Ashes Test, squad unchanged

Australia's hopes of recalling captain Pat Cummins for the crucial second Ashes Test have been dashed after selectors named an unchanged squad for the day-night encounter in Brisbane.

Fitness Battle Ends in Disappointment

Pat Cummins has lost his race to be fit for the upcoming pink-ball Test at the Gabba, with Cricket Australia confirming his continued absence due to a persistent back issue. The 32-year-old fast bowler missed Australia's comprehensive two-day victory in the series opener in Perth but had been making positive strides in his recovery.

Despite undertaking additional fitness work and even bowling at stand-in captain Steve Smith during a practice session in Sydney on Friday, the decision was made to omit Cummins from the 14-man squad. No official reason was provided beyond a brief statement noting: "Pat Cummins will travel to Brisbane to continue his preparations. The squad assembles in Brisbane from Sunday."

Significant Blow for Australian Attack

Cummins' continued absence represents a significant advantage for England as they look to level the series. While Australia triumphed without him in Perth, his record in day-night Test cricket is exceptional. With 43 wickets at an average of 17.34 in just five matches, including best figures of 6/23 taken at the Gabba in 2019, his expertise under lights is virtually unmatched.

Mitchell Starc, named Player of the Match for his ten-wicket haul in Perth, will continue to lead the attack. Starc is Test cricket's most prolific wicket-taker in day-night fixtures with 81 scalps, but Cummins sits joint-second despite playing five fewer matches.

Other Squad Developments

With Josh Hazlewood also remaining unavailable, Brendan Doggett and Scott Boland will provide pace bowling support alongside Starc. The batting lineup sees Usman Khawaja retained despite suffering back spasms that limited his involvement throughout the first Test.

Travis Head, who stepped up to open with a match-winning performance in the fourth innings at Perth, keeps his place. However, competition remains fierce with Josh Inglis fresh from scoring a century against the England Lions and all-rounder Beau Webster available as an additional seam option.

While Cummins will travel to Brisbane with the squad, suggesting a slim chance of a late inclusion, it would be highly unusual for selectors to reverse their initial decision. England will be hoping to capitalise on his absence when the second Test begins next week.
