Afternoon Session
The post-lunch session saw Surrey accelerate. Pope brought up his second century of the match, a magnificent innings of 102 off 140 balls, before being dismissed by the impressive Keith Barker. Smith continued to attack, hitting six boundaries on his way to 65. The Hampshire bowlers toiled hard, but the pitch was offering little assistance.
Surrey declared at 280-6, setting Hampshire a target of 351 to win. The visitors faced a tricky period before tea and lost opener Tom Alsop for 12, caught behind off the bowling of Jordan Clark. They reached tea at 25-1, needing 326 more runs.
Evening Session
Hampshire's chase got off to a shaky start. Clark struck again early in the evening session, removing Felix Organ for 8. James Vince and Nick Gubbins then steadied the ship, adding 50 runs for the third wicket. Vince looked in sublime touch, playing some glorious drives. However, just when it seemed they had weathered the storm, Gubbins fell to a sharp catch by Smith at leg slip off the bowling of Dan Worrall.
Vince continued to play positively, reaching his half-century off 72 balls. He found an able partner in Aneurin Donald, who played some big shots. The pair added 80 runs before Donald was dismissed for 45, caught in the deep. At stumps, Hampshire are 180-4, with Vince on 85 not out and Liam Dawson on 12. They still need 171 runs to win on the final day.
