Italian professional cyclist Debora Silvestri is reportedly in good spirits and showing positive signs of recovery after being involved in a terrifying high-speed crash during the prestigious Milan-San Remo race on Saturday. The shocking incident occurred towards the closing stages of the classic one-day race, when several riders were caught up in a dramatic pile-up that left multiple competitors sprawled across the road.
Horrific Crash Details Emerge
Silvestri arrived slightly late to the initial collision scene but in her desperate attempt to avoid the carnage, she tragically lost control and tumbled headfirst over a roadside barrier in truly worrying scenes captured by spectators. The Italian athlete fell several metres before landing heavily on a lower section of the road, where she lay stricken and motionless as medical teams rushed to her assistance.
Hospitalisation and Medical Supervision
Following immediate on-site treatment, Silvestri was transported to a nearby hospital where she remained under close medical supervision throughout Saturday night. Her professional team, Laboral Kutxa, provided a crucial update on Sunday morning via an official statement posted on social media platform X, titled 'medical report update'.
The team confirmed that Silvestri continues to evolve favourably despite the severity of her accident. "She is in good spirits and with the strength to face her recovery," the statement revealed, adding that the cyclist would remain hospitalised for additional monitoring in the coming hours.
Team Expresses Confidence in Recovery
Laboral Kutxa's medical staff expressed confidence that Silvestri's condition would continue to improve steadily. The team committed to providing regular updates on her progress as she navigates the early stages of rehabilitation. Both the athlete and her professional organisation extended sincere gratitude for the overwhelming flood of supportive messages and encouragement received from fans and fellow cyclists worldwide in the aftermath of the accident.
The Milan-San Remo race, often called 'La Classicissima', is one of cycling's most historic and demanding single-day events, stretching approximately 300 kilometres from Milan to the Mediterranean coast. This year's edition was marred by several incidents, with Silvestri's crash representing one of the most visually alarming moments of the entire competition.
