Thomas Tuchel faces a selection headache at right-back after Reece James was ruled out of England's World Cup group-stage finale against Panama with a hamstring injury. The Chelsea captain sustained the issue in training and will miss at least the next two games, leaving the Three Lions boss to reshuffle his defence for the crucial match in New Jersey.
Tuchel's Right-Back Options
Jarell Quansah, Trevoh Chalobah, and Ezri Konsa are all capable of covering the position, with Konsa having started both previous group games at centre-half. However, Tottenham's Djed Spence appears the most likely candidate. The full-back started at left-back against Ghana with Nico O'Reilly rested, but could be deployed in his more natural right-back role.
England need a win to secure top spot in the group and progress to the knockout stages. Tuchel made two changes to his starting XI for the midweek draw with Ghana in Boston, and at least one tweak is expected tonight with James sidelined.
Midfield and Attack Updates
Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson have both been passed fit despite recent fitness doubts. Rice, who is one booking away from a suspension, was seen limping after the Ghana draw while managing a back injury since the turn of the year. Anderson, whose move to Manchester City was finally agreed this week, also picked up a minor issue against the Black Stars. Kobbie Mainoo is waiting in the wings for his first appearance of the tournament.
Bukayo Saka is yet to start a game due to an Achilles injury that caused him to miss five games for Arsenal in April. His club teammate Noni Madueke has deputised in his place, but Tuchel has indicated Saka is 'ready to go' after coming through recent training sessions unscathed. Anthony Gordon has done little to justify another starting role, with Marcus Rashford ready to step in.
Predicted England XI and Match Details
Marc Guehi returned to the starting XI against Ghana and will hope to keep his place at the expense of John Stones. Replacing James is Tuchel's most pressing concern, but there could also be starting roles for Saka and Rashford along with a change in midfield. England cruised to a 6-1 victory the last time these two nations met, and if the Three Lions can take similar control early on, there will be ample opportunity for changes.
Panama vs England kicks off at 10pm on Saturday 27 June. The match will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX.
