Hikers Follow Blood Trail to Rescue Mountaineer with Shattered Skull
In a dramatic rescue operation, two hikers followed a trail of blood to locate an unconscious woman with a shattered skull after a mystery accident in Washington state. The victim, experienced mountaineer Jacque Tietijen, was airlifted to hospital where she is undergoing treatment for multiple brain bleeds and significant skull fractures.
Mystery Accident During Solo Hike
Jacque Tietijen, a veteran mountaineer who has completed climbs including Mount Everest, embarked on what should have been a routine solo hike in Washington state last week. Her family confirmed the experienced hiker regularly tackled challenging trails without raising concerns. However, on February 3, while scaling Bridal Veil Falls, Tietijen suffered a serious accident that left her with life-threatening injuries.
Her sister-in-law, Katherine Tietijen, explained: "We suspect she either slipped and hit her head or was struck by a falling rock. Given her extensive experience on thousands of hikes, this was completely unexpected and shocking for our family."
Dramatic Rescue by Alert Hikers
The rescue unfolded when two other hikers on the pass noticed a disturbing trail of blood. Following the crimson path, they discovered Tietijen unconscious at the bottom of a slope with severe head injuries. The quick-thinking rescuers immediately wrapped their coats around her to maintain body temperature and provided crucial first aid while awaiting emergency services.
Katherine Tietijen told KSLTV: "They took care of her, wrapped their coats around her, tried to get her body temperature up. The fact that they not just noticed the blood trail, but had the inclination to follow it and investigate, that potentially has saved her life. Our family is so grateful. There are no words to how grateful we are to those men."
Severe Injuries and Hospital Treatment
Tietijen was airlifted to Utah Valley Hospital where medical teams are treating multiple serious injuries including:
- Several brain bleeds requiring careful monitoring
- Significant skull and facial fractures
- A minimal tear to her carotid artery
Doctors are particularly concerned about brain swelling, with Katherine Tietijen explaining: "If it starts to swell too much, they will have to do emergency surgery and take a piece out of her skull to give the brain space to expand." The mountaineer is currently intubated and sedated in the intensive care unit as medical staff monitor her condition.
Long Recovery Ahead
The family anticipates a lengthy recovery process, with Tietijen expected to spend approximately one week in intensive care before being transferred to the neurology unit. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover medical expenses and has nearly reached its $28,000 target.
The fundraising page describes Tietijen as someone with "a deep love for the outdoors" who participates in outdoor photography, climbing, highland games, aerial arts, and hiking. It states: "We know she will fight with everything she has to be able to return to her family and all the things she loves. There is a long road ahead."
Medical professionals have indicated it will be several days before they can determine if Tietijen is out of immediate danger, with her family anxiously awaiting updates on her condition while praising the heroic actions of the hikers who found her.
