YouTube personality and influencer Logan Paul has achieved a monumental sale, securing a staggering £12.1 million for a rare Pokemon trading card. The 30-year-old American sold his PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator card during a highly publicised livestreamed auction, with the final price totalling 16,492,000 US dollars, equivalent to approximately £12,102,000.
Record-Breaking Auction Details
The sale was conducted by the prominent online auction house Goldin and has officially broken two significant world records. It now holds the title for the most expensive trading card ever sold at auction, as well as the most expensive Pokemon card sold at auction. This surpasses all previous benchmarks in the collectibles market.
Buyer and Previous Ownership
The card was purchased by venture capitalist AJ Scaramucci, who is notably the son of former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci. Logan Paul had originally acquired the card in 2021 for 5.2 million US dollars, which was around £3.8 million at the time, setting a record then for the most expensive Pokemon card sold in a private sale.
Farewell to a Prized Possession
Prior to the auction, Paul bid an emotional farewell to the card, which he described as the "greatest collectible in the world" in a post on his Instagram page. The livestreamed event was closely monitored by Guinness World Records adjudicator Sarah Casson, who was present to officially declare the record-breaking achievement.
Official Guinness World Records Confirmation
Sarah Casson stated during the event: "On behalf of Guinness World Records, I can now confirm you have achieved a new record title not only for the most expensive Pokemon card ever sold at auction, but also the overall record for the most expensive trading card ever sold at auction. Congratulations!"
Card Features and Significance
The card itself features a detailed depiction of Pikachu, the iconic golden character most readily associated with the Pokemon franchise. This sale highlights the growing market for high-value collectibles and the significant influence of social media personalities in driving interest and value in such items.
