A decade has passed since former Manchester City and Sunderland winger Adam Johnson was imprisoned for sexual offences involving a minor. His long-term partner, Stacey Flounders, has now revealed damning comments about his behaviour before ultimately taking him back after his release.
The Conviction and Initial Fallout
In 2016, Johnson was sentenced to six years in prison for grooming and engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old Sunderland supporter. The offence occurred in his Range Rover in January 2015, following extensive grooming through social media platforms. Johnson served half of his sentence before being released on licence in March 2019.
Flounders initially stood by Johnson during his court proceedings but ended their relationship when the full extent of his crimes became clear. She told the Daily Mail in 2019 that she did not believe he was a paedophile, instead describing him as a sex addict. However, she was unequivocal in her criticism, labelling him an "arrogant man" and calling his actions "horrific."
Flounders' Candid Assessment
On her decision to leave Johnson at the time, Flounders stated: "I knew then that Adam was an arrogant man who had lied and lied. He'd known this girl's age. He'd sent her hundreds of messages. It was horrific." This frank admission highlighted the profound betrayal she felt upon learning the truth about his grooming activities.
Reconciliation During the Pandemic
Despite this strong condemnation, the couple reunited during the COVID-19 pandemic and have since resettled in the north-east of England. A former school friend of Flounders explained her reasoning to the Mail: "Stacey knows her own mind and grew up in a very close family. If anything persuaded her to give him another chance, it will have been to give their children a stable upbringing."
The pandemic, which struck a year after Johnson's release, gradually altered their circumstances. An insider noted: "He was anxious to make up for lost time with his daughter, having missed the early part of her life in jail. He's a committed dad and that's why they were able to try again. They now have a second child and they are very much a happy family."
Financial Security and Lifestyle Changes
Previously residing in a £1.8 million six-bedroom property within a gated community, the couple downsized to a more modest £470,000 home. Nevertheless, they maintain a comfortable lifestyle, supported by Johnson's substantial football earnings accumulated before his incarceration. The couple have two children together and are described as financially secure.
An unnamed family member suggested that their financial situation helped Flounders overcome doubts about the relationship: "Money will have played a part. He hasn't worked since he ended his football career. He put away enough money during his playing career that they can live a very good lifestyle without worrying. They have a nice life, the children won't want for anything."
Johnson's Current Life and Transformation
Johnson's aunt, Irene Welsh, described him as "happy" and noted he "keeps himself busy and has lots of friends." He has been seen in local pubs, with residents characterising him as a "Mr Average type." A former team-mate portrayed him as a "typically suburban dad" who exhibits a new sense of "calm and acceptance." They added that Johnson "has finally been tamed" by Flounders, crediting her influence for his apparent transformation.
