Akliouche Earns Shock France Call Up After Monaco Brace

Maghnes Akliouche has earned a surprise call-up to the France national team after a standout performance for Monaco, scoring one goal and setting up the last-minute winner in a 3-2 victory over Strasbourg. The 23-year-old forward's inclusion in Didier Deschamps' squad was described by the player as a 'great surprise', though his form has been building for some time.

Akliouche's development has been a patient process. Monaco Under-17s coach Manu Dos Santos noted that the forward was not physically ready at 17 or 18, unlike some precocious talents. 'Maghnes was late to mature physically compared with teammates the same age,' Dos Santos said. 'We questioned his athletic development. He has always had confidence in himself and he had the patience to take those steps.'

Monaco manager Adi Hütter has been a vocal supporter, stating last season: 'France has so many players on a top level but I cannot see another player who has the same skills as Maghnes Akliouche. He is a totally different player.' However, even Hütter admitted he had doubts two years ago, when Akliouche 'wasn't strong enough'. The winger's technical ability, vision and reading of the game have always been evident, but a lack of physicality initially held him back.

Akliouche's breakthrough came after Hütter's arrival and a silver medal at the Paris Olympics under Thierry Henry. He has since added consistency to his flair, becoming the leader of Monaco's attack. Despite persistent speculation linking him with Tottenham, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain, Akliouche celebrated his goal against Strasbourg by kissing the Monaco badge, suggesting he will stay at the club.

'I will stay how I am. The most important thing for me will be to give even more on the pitch, to help even more than last season,' Akliouche said. His shy personality means he lets his football do the talking, but his performances have spoken volumes, earning him a place in the France squad.
