Arne Slot Delivers Alexander Isak Injury News as Liverpool Face Galatasaray
Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has been observed participating in individual training sessions just before the critical Champions League encounter with Galatasaray. However, manager Arne Slot has clarified that a return to the first team is not expected in the immediate future.
Isak's Recovery Progress and Setback Timeline
The Swedish international, aged 26, suffered a fibula fracture in December, necessitating surgical intervention. Isak, who joined Liverpool in a record-breaking transfer last summer, was seen working on the pitch alone ahead of the Reds' decisive second-leg match. While this development is encouraging for the Premier League champions, Slot emphasized that Isak will not be available for selection in the upcoming fixtures, including Saturday's game.
Slot stated, "The fact you see Alex on the pitch shows he is getting closer. He won't be available Saturday either. No timescale." He further explained the challenges in recovery, noting, "If you have done months on the individual session it's quite a step up to train with the team and then it's a step up to play in Premier League and Champions League."
Joe Gomez's Fitness Test and Team Dynamics
In contrast, defender Joe Gomez might be available for the Champions League clash, despite missing training on Tuesday due to lingering issues from previous matches. Slot indicated that a decision on Gomez's participation will be made following a late fitness test on Wednesday. Liverpool must overcome a 1-0 deficit to advance to the quarter-finals, adding pressure to the squad's injury concerns.
Slot commented, "Alex is not available and Joe we will decide tomorrow. [Gomez] wasn't ready to train today. He had too many issues after the last game although he had the issues after the Galatasaray. [It] wasn't the plan to play against Tottenham but Ibou [Konate] felt his hamstring and didn't want to risk him. He is going to try tomorrow, Joe."
This update comes as Liverpool navigate a challenging period with key players sidelined, impacting their strategy for crucial matches in both domestic and European competitions.
