Arsenal Enter Fierce Transfer Battle for Dortmund's Julian Brandt
Arsenal have initiated their summer transfer planning, with manager Mikel Arteta aiming to bolster his squad's depth as they compete on multiple fronts. The Gunners have now emerged as serious contenders to sign Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Julian Brandt, who will become a free agent in June upon the expiry of his contract.
Dortmund Confirm Brandt's Departure
Borussia Dortmund CEO of sport Lars Ricken confirmed on Saturday that Julian Brandt, 29, will leave the club this summer after seven years of service. Ricken stated, "There were open discussions, and both sides agreed that the expiring contract would not be extended. He's played a few hundred games for Borussia Dortmund. I think we can only be grateful to him."
The German international joined Dortmund from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019, helping the club win the DFB-Pokal in 2021 and reaching the Champions League final in 2024. Dortmund had attempted to retain Brandt with a new contract that would have required a salary reduction, but the player declined the offer.
Arsenal Face Barcelona Competition
According to Sky Germany reports, Arsenal have joined Barcelona in pursuing Brandt's signature. The midfielder reportedly desires to move abroad for the first time in his career, creating an opportunity for both European giants. However, Barcelona may hold significant advantages in the race.
Brandt is said to be fluent in Spanish and has a Catalan girlfriend, making a move to Barcelona particularly appealing. Additionally, he would reunite with former Germany manager Hansi Flick at the Catalan club. Arsenal's challenge will be convincing Brandt to choose North London over Catalonia.
Financial Considerations and Previous Interest
Arsenal could potentially match Brandt's current €8 million (£6.9 million) annual salary and offer a substantial signing-on bonus to sweeten the deal. The Gunners' financial package might prove crucial in their pursuit of the experienced midfielder.
During the January transfer window, Dortmund rejected bids from two unnamed English clubs for Brandt as they hoped to convince him to stay. Neither Arsenal nor Barcelona have yet approached Brandt's agent and father, Jurgen, regarding a potential move.
Ricken added about Brandt's departure, "I believe he'll be 30 in a few weeks - we can reassess things. So, this could be an opportunity for both sides. We have ultimately reached an agreement and I believe we parted with a great deal of respect."
Arteta's Squad Building Challenge
Mikel Arteta views Brandt as valuable reinforcement for an Arsenal squad competing across multiple competitions. The Spanish manager believes additional depth could prove crucial as Arsenal pursue domestic and European success. Brandt's versatility as an attacking midfielder would provide Arteta with more tactical options and experienced cover.
Aston Villa have also been linked with the German international, indicating widespread interest in the soon-to-be free agent. Brandt's decision will likely hinge on sporting project, financial terms, and personal preferences as he approaches what could be the final major move of his career.
