Arteta's Growing Frustration with Summer Signing Eze
Despite Arsenal's impressive march towards the Premier League title, internal frustrations have surfaced within the squad. Manager Mikel Arteta, known for his high standards, has become visibly frustrated with summer signing Eberechi Eze following a lacklustre performance against Chelsea.
The Gunners recently defeated Chelsea for the third time this season under Liam Rosenior, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points. Arsenal remain active in four competitions this season, including the Champions League, FA Cup, and the upcoming Carabao Cup final against title rivals Manchester City.
Eze's Inconsistent Form Draws Criticism
Eberechi Eze, who joined Arsenal from Crystal Palace last summer, has made 13 goal contributions so far, including five goals against north London rivals Tottenham, endearing him to fans as a derby hero. However, his recent display against Chelsea, with only 17 accurate passes out of 22 and two shots, left Arteta agitated on the touchline.
Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney previously criticised Eze, stating on his show: "I don’t think he’s been good enough this season. The two Tottenham games have shined a big light on him but in other games I’ve watched him and not thought he’s been good enough." Rooney emphasised that Eze needs to make it "impossible" for Arteta to drop him through consistent performances and training efforts.
Calafiori's Transfer Revelation
In other news, defender Riccardo Calafiori has admitted he dreams of returning to Roma in the future. The 23-year-old, who joined Arsenal in July 2024 for up to £42 million, has lost his starting position following an injury in December. Since returning, he has only started one Premier League match, with loan star Piero Hincapie impressing in his absence.
Arteta has hinted at signing Hincapie permanently for £45 million, coinciding with Calafiori's revelation. As per Corriere dello Sport, Calafiori said: "I'd like to return to Roma sooner or later. We can't plan it, of course, but yes, I want to return." He added that he left the club with "something unfinished", referencing a promising start under Jose Mourinho that was cut short.
Despite this, Calafiori remains happy at Arsenal, praising Arteta's demanding nature and commitment to player development. He told Sky Sports: "Obviously, he's a really demanding guy, but I like it. It's always better when your coach is asking you things... it's crazy how much effort he puts every time, every day."
Arteta's Trophy Ambitions
Arteta remains focused on Arsenal's pursuit of multiple trophies this season. Regarding their FA Cup campaign and other silverware dreams, he stated: "We want that one for sure (the FA Cup) and all the big ones. And that’s what we are chasing and that’s the purpose of this team." He emphasised that the team will be judged at the end of the season based on their achievements.
As Arsenal continue their title charge, the dynamics within the squad, including Arteta's frustrations and player transfer aspirations, add layers to their campaign narrative.
