Arteta Could Leave Arsenal on a High if He Ends Trophy Drought, Says Petit
Arteta's Arsenal future in doubt despite success

Mikel Arteta could be tempted to leave Arsenal at the end of this season if he finally ends the club's wait for silverware, according to former Gunner Emmanuel Petit. The Spaniard's future is under speculation despite his team's impressive form.

Petit's Bold Prediction on Arteta's Future

Emmanuel Petit, who won the Premier League and FA Cup double with Arsenal in the 1997-98 season, has suggested that a successful campaign could prompt Arteta to seek a new challenge. The manager has just over 18 months remaining on his current contract at the Emirates Stadium.

In an interview with Snabbare, Petit speculated that a return to Spain, and specifically to FC Barcelona, could be a major lure for Arteta. The Arsenal boss spent time in Barcelona's famous La Masia academy as a young player.

Why Barcelona Could Be the Next Destination

Petit outlined the potential thought process for Arteta if he secures a trophy. "Honestly, with the job he is doing, can you imagine if he wins something at the end of the season?" Petit said. "He would probably say: 'Okay, that seems fair. For me, after almost seven years, I have done it with Arsenal. I think it is time to see something else.' I can understand that."

He added that the appeal of Barcelona, coupled with lifestyle benefits for his family, could be decisive. "If Barcelona knocks on your door, you think: 'Okay, listen, Barcelona is one of the best clubs in the world. I will go back to Spain, and the lifestyle is good for my family.'"

Arsenal's Charge for Silverware This Season

The speculation comes as Arsenal find themselves in a strong position to win multiple trophies. The club has not lifted a major honour since the FA Cup victory in 2020, but that could change this term.

Currently, Arteta's side are:

  • Leading the race in the Premier League.
  • Top of their UEFA Champions League group.
  • Through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
  • Set to begin their FA Cup campaign in January.

Many pundits are now tipping the North London club to go all the way in both the Premier League and Europe. A triumphant season would see Arteta depart on the ultimate high, potentially paving the way for a dramatic return to Catalonia.
