Cronulla Sharks coach Chad Townsend has faced a fierce backlash from supporters after departing his struggling SG Ball Cup team to travel to Las Vegas for media commitments. The premiership winner's under-19s side had opened their nine-week season with three consecutive losses when he jetted off to participate in broadcasting duties for the NRL season opener.
Medical Scare During Flight to Sin City
During the plane journey to Las Vegas, Townsend experienced a concerning medical episode, fainting after suffering hot and cold flushes. He required immediate treatment from a doctor and nurse onboard the aircraft. Despite this dramatic incident, the 35-year-old proceeded to fulfil his broadcasting responsibilities for the Sports Entertainment Network (SEN) at the double-header event held at Allegiant Stadium.
Fan Fury Over Perceived Dereliction of Duty
Although Townsend later updated fans on social media platform X to confirm his recovery from the ordeal, he has received significant negative feedback from rugby league supporters. Many have not forgiven him for what they view as abandoning his coaching duties while his team floundered without a victory.
One critic commented, 'Coach of the SG Ball team was headed to Vegas to do a vlog one-third of the way through the season while his team had yet to win a game. Guilty conscience perhaps.' Another supporter remarked, 'Aren't you meant to be coaching this weekend? 0-3 – not a good start. I'd faint too.'
Further criticism included questions about his priorities, with one fan asking, 'Hey Chad, shouldn't you be back at home with your team? 0-3 to start the season and you jet off to Vegas.' Another sceptically inquired, 'Aren't you meant to be coaching SG Ball? You doing it via Zoom?'
Team Secures Victory in Coach's Absence
Compounding the situation, Townsend's SG Ball Cup team achieved their first win of the 2026 season during his absence in the United States. The side delivered a dominant 20-0 shutout victory against the St George Illawarra Dragons at Sharks Stadium.
Additional Vegas Commitments and Future Plans
Townsend, who retired after playing six games for the Sydney Roosters last year, also travelled to Las Vegas to record content for his podcast, which is sponsored by BearBet. The coach is scheduled to resume his role with the Cronulla Sharks when they face the unbeaten Sydney Roosters at home this upcoming weekend.
