Chelsea head into the 2025-26 Premier League season with renewed optimism after securing Champions League qualification on the final day of last season and an unexpected Club World Cup triumph. The 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the July final has transformed perceptions of the club, with many now viewing them as potential Premier League title contenders. However, a shortened pre-season means they face a significant challenge to be ready for their opening match against Crystal Palace on 17 August.
Manager Enzo Maresca has built one of the deepest squads in the league, with elite options in almost every position. The club have been linked with further additions, including Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho, but departures will be necessary to balance the books after Uefa fined Chelsea €31m (£27m) for breaching financial regulations. An additional €60m fine could follow if they fail to comply over the next four years.
Maresca’s position was under threat in April after a poor run of form, but five wins from the final six league games secured fourth place and saved the season. The Club World Cup final also showcased his tactical acumen, as he neutralised PSG’s front three and created space for Cole Palmer. The Italian will now receive a far warmer reception at Stamford Bridge for the league opener.
Chelsea’s controversial financial strategies, including long contract amortisation and the sale of their women’s team, have allowed them to assemble a young, talented squad. However, the club’s stadium situation remains unresolved, with the 40,044-capacity Stamford Bridge difficult to redevelop and a potential move to Earl’s Court under consideration.
New signing Estêvão, an 18-year-old Brazilian winger, has already impressed at the Club World Cup, scoring against Chelsea for Palmeiras. Cole Palmer said after swapping shirts with him: “I told Estêvão: ‘We are excited for you to join’ but he didn’t understand a single word I said.” The £52m arrival is expected to add further depth to Chelsea’s attack.
