Mohamed Salah's first-half penalty secured a 1-0 victory for 10-man Egypt over South Africa in their Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash, making Egypt the first team to reach the knockout stages. Egypt now have six points from two games, while South Africa remain on three points.
Salah won the penalty after being caught in the face by South Africa defender Khuliso Mudau, and he converted calmly for his second goal of the tournament. Egypt's right-back Mohamed Hany was sent off just before half-time for a stamp, leaving his side to withstand sustained South African pressure in the second half.
South Africa were denied a penalty of their own after a lengthy VAR check for handball. Despite dominating possession after the break, they could not find an equaliser.
In other Group B action, Angola and Zimbabwe drew 1-1, leaving both teams with one point and facing difficult final group matches. Angola face Egypt on Monday, while Zimbabwe take on South Africa.
Meanwhile, in Group A, Mali earned a 1-1 draw with Morocco thanks to a second-half penalty from Lassine Sinayoko, while Zambia were held to a goalless draw by Comoros.
