Cucurella Criticises Chelsea's Youth Policy and Maresca Exit

Marc Cucurella has criticised Chelsea's transfer policy under the BlueCo consortium, which has focused on signing young players with high potential and market value since 2022. The Spanish left-back, a leading voice in the dressing room, made his feelings known in an interview while on international duty with Spain.

Cucurella highlighted the lack of experience in the squad, particularly after Chelsea's 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. 'We lacked experience,' he told The Athletic. 'For a lot of players, it was the first time playing a match of that calibre, and we paid the price.' He noted that the team made mistakes and attacked without structure, allowing PSG to exploit their cutting edge.

The defender expressed discouragement about the club's direction: 'You are fighting and training every day only to realise, at the very end, that when games matter, we are still a bit away from the top level.' He acknowledged the club's policy of signing young players for the future but stressed the need for balance. 'To fight for major trophies such as the Premier League or the Champions League, you need more. Signing young players might only complicate achieving those goals.'

Cucurella also criticised the sacking of former manager Enzo Maresca, saying he would have 'died for him.' The interview comes as Chelsea have only won the Conference League and Club World Cup since the ownership change, with no Premier League or Champions League titles.
