Colorado Coach Deion Sanders Delivers Heartfelt Eulogy at Quarterback's Funeral
Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders fought back tears as he delivered a moving eulogy at the funeral service for his late quarterback Dominiq Ponder on Saturday. The emotional memorial was held on the university campus in Boulder, bringing together family, friends, and teammates to honor the 23-year-old sophomore who tragically died in a car accident earlier this month.
A Celebration of Life and Legacy
The celebration of life ceremony provided space for grieving loved ones to remember Ponder, who passed away in the early hours of last Sunday morning after losing control of his Tesla vehicle. Sanders, widely known by his nickname Coach Prime, took to the stage to share personal reflections about the young athlete just days after his sudden death.
The visibly emotional coach appeared choked up on multiple occasions throughout his speech. He began by acknowledging how challenging it felt to speak immediately after Ponder's family members had shared their memories. Sanders expressed deep admiration for the family, stating how much they inspired him during this difficult period.
Philosophical Reflections on Tragedy
During his eulogy, Sanders offered philosophical thoughts about coping with unexpected loss. 'We always ask questions about why this happened... "God, why this and why that?"' the coach reflected. 'When we're successful and we're excelling and overcoming adversity, we never ask God "why" then, only in our demise and sadness of life, we challenge and ask God, "why". I think I've got the solution.'
Sanders continued with emotional conviction: 'As I look right there, and look at a young man so full of life, so full of respect, hustle, hard work and integrity... I ask God, "for real?" And He whispered: "Dom was chosen."' The coach emphasized this theme throughout his remarks, stating: 'Dom was chosen to unite y'all, to bring you all together... Dom was chosen.'
Personal Regret and Family Appreciation
As he addressed Ponder's family directly, Sanders became particularly emotional, expressing his only regret about their relationship. 'The only darn thing I have regret for, is that when you sent us a boy... I wanted to send you back a man,' the coach said with visible emotion.
Ahead of the ceremony, Ponder's family had released a statement expressing their 'heartfelt gratitude for the love, prayers, and support shown during this incredibly difficult time.' They added: 'Your kindness, encouragement, and presence have brought comfort and strength to our family. We are deeply thankful to everyone who has reached out, offered words of compassion, and joined us in celebrating Dominiq’s life and legacy.'
In a separate acknowledgment, the family specifically thanked Sanders for his support, writing: 'We would like to extend a very special thank you to Coach Deion Sanders for his unwavering generosity, support, and love shown to our family.'
Community Support and Team Mourning
Following Ponder's death, a GoFundMe page was established to support his grieving parents, Catrina and Wendell, along with his siblings Carl and Monroe. All proceeds from the fundraising effort will go directly to the family to assist with funeral expenses and provide support during their period of mourning.
Earlier in the week, Sanders had called an emergency team meeting as the Buffaloes began their spring training program. The team was visibly devastated by the news of their teammate's passing. In video footage shared on social media, Colorado players were captured in tears, some holding their heads in their hands or covering their faces with shirts as they gathered to remember Ponder.
The 58-year-old Sanders, whose own sons Shedeur and Shilo previously played for the Buffaloes, comforted his players throughout the gathering, embracing them as they processed their collective grief. The NFL legend addressed the team emotionally, encouraging them to honor their teammate's memory.
'The good man that he was. His character, humor, work ethic, tenacity. It's something that I want us to remember,' Sanders told his players during the emotional team gathering. Ponder, who served as a backup quarterback at Colorado, had played twice for the team during the 2025 season before his tragic passing.
