Former Manchester City shot-stopper Ederson has candidly revealed that he felt the urgent need to depart the Premier League champions this summer, culminating in his £12 million transfer to Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
A Glittering Era Concludes
The Brazilian international enjoyed an immensely successful eight-year spell under manager Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium. During his tenure, he was a cornerstone of the team's dominance, securing six Premier League titles and playing a pivotal role in their historic Champions League triumph, amassing a total of 18 major honours with the club.
His departure marked the end of a significant chapter for City, who have since brought in Gianluigi Donnarumma as their new first-choice goalkeeper.
The Drive for a New Challenge
While on international duty with Brazil, Ederson explained his reasoning, stating that all cycles must eventually end. 'I had eight wonderful years wearing the City shirt,' he reflected. 'But I needed this change and a change of scenery.'
He elaborated on the positive impact of the move, saying it has reinvigorated his passion for the game. 'Sometimes it's really good to have new challenges in your life, in your career,' Ederson noted. 'It brings new energy, many positive things, and something new within you. With this change, I'm breathing football again.'
He expressed particular enthusiasm for the 'crazy' atmosphere in Turkey and his ambition to help Fenerbahce reclaim a national title they have not won for a long time.
Previous Frustrations and a Return to Form
The goalkeeper also disclosed that his desire to leave Manchester City was not a sudden decision. He confirmed he had attempted to secure a move a season earlier, but the transfer did not materialise.
He directly linked this failed attempt to his subsequent dip in performance during the last campaign, a season in which he suffered five separate injuries. 'I think that influenced my performance a bit during the season,' Ederson admitted. 'I wasn't at my highest possible level.'
He emphasised that happiness is paramount, regardless of a club's stature. 'There's no point in being at a giant, winning club if you're not happy,' he stated. 'That would continue to affect me in the same way.' Now, settled as the undisputed number one in Istanbul and back in favour with the Brazilian national team, Ederson believes the transfer has been the catalyst for him returning to his best.
