New Zealand produced a remarkable recovery from a disastrous start with the bat to secure a 14-run victory over England at Canterbury, levelling the three-match T20 series at 1-1.
New Zealand's early collapse and recovery
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, New Zealand slumped to 11 for four inside the first four overs. Linsey Smith was the chief destroyer, taking three wickets in her opening two overs, including the prized scalp of skipper Melie Kerr for a duck. However, a magnificent partnership of 159 between Sophie Devine and Maddy Green turned the innings around.
Devine smashed 87 off 58 balls, hitting six sixes and five fours, while Green remained unbeaten on 56 as New Zealand posted 170 for five. Their stand became New Zealand's highest in women's T20s against England.
England's chase falls short
England began their reply positively, with openers Sophia Dunkley (26) and Alice Capsey (22) taking the score to 76 for two in the powerplay. Captain Heather Knight made 25 before being run out following a mix-up with Maia Bouchier. Bouchier then fell next ball for 38, caught at long-on.
Despite late contributions from Dani Gibson (12) and Freya Kemp (14), England finished on 156 for six, falling short of the target. Smith finished with three for 25 for New Zealand.
Series decider awaits
The final match of the series will be played at Hove on Monday, with both teams vying for series victory.
