Fan Dies in Fall at World Cup Venue Before Mexico vs Portugal Match

A football fan died at the Estadio Banorte in Mexico City on Saturday after falling from a VIP box seat ahead of a World Cup warm-up friendly between Mexico and Portugal. The stadium, which recently underwent renovations, is set to host matches during the 2026 World Cup, including the opening ceremony on June 11.

According to officials, the man attempted to climb from the second level of VIP box seats to the first level by moving along the exterior of the structure. He was reportedly intoxicated and fell to the ground floor. The incident occurred before the match, which proceeded as planned and ended in a goalless draw.

The Mexico City Public Prosecutor's Office issued a statement expressing deep regret and confirming that an investigation is underway. Forensic experts, investigators, and specialists in criminalistics, photography, and forensic medicine have collected evidence and are analysing CCTV footage. A post-mortem examination is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
