Rio Ferdinand Advises Man United's Yoro to Pick Battles Wisely Amid Physical Concerns
Ferdinand: Man United's Yoro Must Choose On-Field Battles Carefully

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has delivered pointed advice to young defender Leny Yoro, suggesting the centre-back needs to be more judicious in his on-field engagements due to current physical constraints in the Premier League.

Ferdinand's Candid Assessment of Yoro's Approach

Speaking on his popular podcast, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the ex-England international analysed Yoro's recent performances, noting a tendency to overcommit in physical duels. Ferdinand emphasised that the 20-year-old Frenchman is competing against opponents who are typically more physically developed at this stage of their careers.

"Leny Yoro right now is trying to fight too many fights in a game, when physically he's not starting at the same place," Ferdinand stated bluntly. "They're all much more physically developed. Most of the players he's playing against and number nines especially are stronger than him."

Strategic Battle Selection Recommended

The six-time Premier League winner offered tactical guidance, suggesting Yoro must become more selective in his defensive engagements. "So, then you've got to pick your battles. Pick your duel. Which one are you actually going to have if you've got a 60-40 in your favour? Then you go all in," Ferdinand advised, highlighting the importance of choosing advantageous moments to commit fully.

This counsel comes as Yoro has started Manchester United's last three matches under manager Michael Carrick, including last week's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle where the defender experienced difficulties. The increased involvement brings his season total to 27 appearances, approaching last year's tally of 32 games.

Martinez's Extended Absence Creates Opportunity

Yoro's recent run in the starting lineup has been facilitated by the prolonged absence of established defender Lisandro Martinez, who has been sidelined since early February with a calf injury. The Argentina international has managed just 15 appearances this season, having previously undergone a demanding nine-month recovery from an ACL injury.

Martinez recently revealed the profound psychological impact of his rehabilitation journey, admitting to South American television channel DSports that he contemplated retirement during his recovery. "It was one of the toughest situations. I needed everyone's help; without them, it wouldn't have been easy. You have to start from scratch again," Martinez confessed.

Teammate Support Proved Crucial

The defender highlighted the significant support he received from international colleagues during his lowest moments. "Dibu (Martinez) and Mac Allister showed up at my house to support me. That shows what we are like in the national team, how we look out for each other," Martinez explained, referring to Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

He recounted the emotional moment when his teammates arrived unexpectedly: "Dibu sent me a message. He said, 'I'm coming to your house', and when he arrived he said: 'Mac Allister is coming too.' It was a really nice moment."

As Yoro continues to gain valuable Premier League experience during Martinez's absence, Ferdinand's advice underscores the challenging transition young defenders face when adapting to the physical demands of English football's top division.
