Which football club has had the fewest sponsor logos on their shirt? Bob Krag asks, guessing Arsenal with only four (JVC, Dreamcast/Sega, O2, Emirates), even fewer than Barcelona. But PSV Eindhoven have had only three: Philips (1982-2016), EnergieDirect (2016-2019), and Brainport Eindhoven (2019-present). Philips was essentially the club's founder in 1913 as Philips Sport Vereniging, and Brainport is a collective including Philips.
More Clubs with Few Sponsors
Wolfsburg has had Volkswagen since 1991, with only a brief prior sponsor Kelts. Stranraer in Scotland had Burgess Motors (1985-1988), Sealink (1988-1996), and Stena Line (1996-present), effectively two sponsors in over 40 years. In Japan, Sanfrecce Hiroshima has had Mazda since 1992, and Kawasaki Frontale has had Fujitsu since 1991. Gamba Osaka (Panasonic), Yokohama F Marinos (Nissan), and Kashiwa Reysol (Hitachi) also have single sponsors since their founding in the early 1990s. Celta Vigo had Citroën (1985-2016) and Estrella Galicia (2016-present). Rangers de Talca in Chile has had Productos Fernández since 1977, a deal lasting until 2031. FC United of Manchester has never had a front-of-shirt sponsor due to anti-commercial philosophy.
Biggest Points Deficit Overturned
Daz Pearce asks about the highest points deficit overturned by a lower-placed team. A record example is Stockport County (17 points) beating Manchester City (83 points) in 2002, a 66-point gap. Another is Sunderland (34 points) beating Wolves (99 points) in 2018. Adjusting for three points per win, Grimsby Town's 1920 win over Tottenham represents a 69-point difference.
Worst-Performing Title-Winning Managers
Niall McVeigh asks about managers with poor records who still helped win a title. Roy McFarland took over Burton Albion in 2009 after Nigel Clough left, with Burton leading the Conference. McFarland won only 8 of 19 games (1.42 PPG) compared to Clough's 2.26 PPG, but Burton still won the title. Wilfried Nancy had two wins in six league games for Celtic before they won the league.
Goalkeeper Taking a Corner
Eugene Francis asked if a goalkeeper ever took a corner. Javi Yegros of CD Pedrusco de Garbayuela in Spain took a corner and scored directly, an Olympic goal, after switching to goalkeeper from outfield.
