Tommy Fleetwood Provides Update on Family Stranded in Dubai Amid Geopolitical Tensions

PGA Tour star Tommy Fleetwood has disclosed that his immediate family continues to be stranded in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as he gears up for the prestigious Players Championship in the United States this week. The world number three golfer is scheduled to tee off at Sawgrass on Thursday, competing for a substantial winner's purse of £3.3 million in the tour's flagship event.

Family Safety Paramount Amid Ongoing US-Iran Conflict

Fleetwood's family finds themselves unable to depart the UAE due to the persisting conflict between the United States and Iran, which has disrupted international air travel routes. Although Dubai's airspace has recently been partially reopened, uncertainty remains regarding when his loved ones can safely join him stateside.

Speaking candidly at his pre-tournament press conference, the 35-year-old English professional provided a reassuring update. "They're still in Dubai at the moment," Fleetwood confirmed. "Yeah, it's been a strange time. I can honestly say that my family have been very, very safe. I think the UAE, the country, have done an unbelievable job at making everybody feel very safe and very secure and handling that."

Fleetwood Dismisses Notion of Using Situation as Performance Excuse

When questioned whether concerns about his family's welfare had negatively impacted his recent performance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he finished a disappointing 49th place, Fleetwood firmly rejected making any excuses. "I don't really like to make excuses," he stated emphatically. "I definitely won't be one to say whether it has a role in how I play or not. I think Bay Hill's hard enough, you know. But I think you just do the best with whatever cards you're dealt with and try and just, when I'm working or playing or practising, just throw myself into that."

The golfer, who is currently priced at 22/1 to win The Players Championship, had previously posted strong finishes of tied fourth and seventh in his initial two PGA Tour starts this season. His recent struggles at Bay Hill saw him card two rounds of 76 across four days, finishing six over par.

Praise for UAE Handling of Crisis Situation

Fleetwood expressed profound gratitude for how Emirati authorities have managed the tense geopolitical situation, ensuring the safety of foreign nationals within their borders. "I honestly can't speak highly enough about how well the country has handled things for the people that are over there," he remarked. "Just I haven't experienced it. I've been over here."

Regarding his family's travel plans, Fleetwood added: "You know, they're supposed to travel soon, so I think they're looking at travelling whenever they can, but the main thing has been that they are safe." He emphasized that while he would prefer his family to be in a "more comfortable situation," he remains grateful for their security.

Competitive Field Awaits at Sawgrass

As Fleetwood prepares to compete without his family present, he faces formidable opposition from top-ranked players including world number one Scottie Scheffler and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, both considered tournament favorites. The English golfer will need to maintain focus amidst the personal distractions to challenge for the coveted title.

Fleetwood concluded his remarks by reiterating his family's wellbeing: "All I can say is that my family have felt very, very safe." His determination to compartmentalize personal concerns from professional performance underscores the mental resilience required at golf's highest level during uncertain times.
