Thomas Frank Backs Dominic Solanke for England World Cup Squad
Frank: Solanke Should Be in England World Cup Squad

Thomas Frank Challenges Dominic Solanke to Earn England World Cup Spot

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has publicly challenged striker Dominic Solanke to fire his way into England's squad for the upcoming World Cup. Solanke, who missed a significant portion of the season following ankle surgery, has made a strong return to action, scoring twice in three appearances since his first start of the campaign. His contributions have been instrumental in Spurs' recent upturn in form, providing a much-needed boost to the team's attacking options.

Frank's Endorsement and Tuchel's Decision

Frank expressed confidence in Solanke's abilities, stating that the striker should be considered for selection when fully fit and performing at his peak. 'It’s for Thomas Tuchel and his staff to take that decision in the end but I think that Dom, when he is 100 per cent fit, sharp and performing, should be in the mix,' said Frank. 'All his qualities are there to be selected.' The 28-year-old forward has less than two months to impress England boss Thomas Tuchel during friendlies against Uruguay and Japan in March, aiming to secure a place in the national team setup.

Solanke's International Record and Competition

Solanke has earned three caps under previous manager Gareth Southgate and was included in Tuchel's first squad, though he did not feature in that match. His last appearance for England came in a 5-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in November 2024. However, he faces stiff competition for a spot in the World Cup squad, with several other centre forwards vying for attention:

  • Ollie Watkins, who is firmly established as Harry Kane's deputy despite a recent hamstring injury.
  • Ivan Toney, currently playing in Saudi Arabia.
  • Danny Welbeck of Brighton.
  • Liam Delap of Chelsea.
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin of Leeds.

Additionally, Tammy Abraham's return to the Premier League with Aston Villa, after five years abroad, adds another layer of competition, as he also has the World Cup in mind. Frank believes that Solanke, once back to his sharpest after recovering from injury, can make a compelling case through his goal-scoring prowess.

Frank's Coaching Philosophy and Solanke's Role

The Spurs boss elaborated on his approach to developing strikers, emphasizing the importance of positioning and training. 'I never set targets, they do that for themselves,' said Frank. 'I just analyse and try to improve the process in terms of training, getting in right areas, video clips, things like that. Most strikers, and I mean the guys who score the most goals, are inside the 18-yard box scoring from small slide passes, crosses and cut-backs and he is very good in those situations.' Solanke's presence has coincided with Tottenham's improved performances, particularly after Frank implemented a new formation with three centre halves and wing backs, which has also benefited other players like Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani.

Impact on Tottenham and Other Players

Spurs have looked more cohesive with Solanke leading the line, and the tactical shift has allowed players like Simons and Kolo Muani to thrive, especially in European competitions. Frank noted that Simons has been on a positive trajectory, though adapting to the Premier League's pace and physicality remains a challenge. Regarding Kolo Muani, who scored in a recent Champions League match despite fitness issues and a car accident, Frank was unequivocal about wanting to retain the loanee from Paris Saint-Germain. 'Yes, next question,' he replied when asked about keeping the French international, highlighting Kolo Muani's one-on-one ability and pace as valuable assets for the team.

Frank expressed hope that Kolo Muani's recent goal and performance would boost his confidence, noting that the striker offers a different dimension to Tottenham's attack. With the World Cup on the horizon, Solanke's form and Frank's backing could play a crucial role in his international aspirations, as he aims to prove his worth in a competitive field of English forwards.
