Former French Olympic gymnast Gael Da Silva has tragically passed away in a road accident at the age of 41. The athlete, affectionately known as Gaou, leaves behind his wife Camille and their three children: Hugo (12), Jules (9), and Lou (6).
The news of his death was announced on Tuesday afternoon, plunging the gymnastics community into mourning. Da Silva's most notable career achievement came in 2012 when he secured a bronze medal in the floor exercise at the European Championships held in Montpellier. He also represented France at the London 2012 Olympics, where the team finished eighth in the men's event.
According to French publication L'Equipe, Da Silva had attended the French Team Championships in Amiens just days before the accident. His life was marked by resilience; in 2004, he was involved in a severe motorcycle accident after being hit by a car, which forced him to relearn how to walk. Multiple surgeries on his right leg were required, but he made a remarkable recovery and returned to competitive gymnastics.
Reflecting on that incident, Da Silva once said: 'My first stroke of luck was being knocked down by a firefighter who was able to prevent me from losing all my blood. The second was that my mother convinced the surgeon to operate normally, inserting a pin in the femur rather than a prosthesis. From my hospital bed, I saw the gym slipping away, but I didn't want to stop there. Without it, I don't know what I would have done with my life. That's what motivated me to get out of there quickly.'
In retirement, Da Silva worked as a technical sales representative for Gymnova. His son Jules has followed in his footsteps, becoming an avid gymnast himself.
