Jim Furyk has admitted he would like golf icon Tiger Woods to join his Ryder Cup set-up for the 2027 contest at Adare Manor, despite Woods currently undergoing treatment in Switzerland following a recent car crash.
Furyk's Plans for Woods
Furyk, who will lead the United States team for a second time after their heavy defeat at Le Golf National in 2018, has previously served alongside Woods as a vice-captain. Woods is reportedly undergoing treatment in Switzerland after being charged with driving under the influence (DUI) following a car crash near his Florida home in March. Police found prescription opioid hydrocodone pills, used by Woods for pain management after multiple operations, in his possession.
The newly appointed captain revealed he had held off contacting Woods out of respect for his recovery, but said he plans to reach out to him in the future about potentially being involved in next year's Ryder Cup.
Furyk's Statement
"We haven't spoken yet. I think, out of kind of courtesy for him and his family and I know maybe a road to health, I haven't reached out but I will," Furyk stated. "Definitely. We'll see where that role may fall." Reflecting on their past collaborations, Furyk praised Woods' impact.
"I will say I enjoyed serving – I use that word serving – as a vice-captain with him a number of times. I think he brought a lot to the team room and a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience," he added. The prospect of Woods' return to the Ryder Cup fold, even in an advisory capacity, clearly excites the US captain, as he looks to win back the famous trophy that has eluded the US team in recent years.
Europe have won the last two editions of the Ryder Cup, and will have home advantage at next year's competition in Ireland.
