Greenwood Confirms Marseille Stay Amid Transfer Rumours

Mason Greenwood has confirmed his desire to remain at Marseille for the upcoming season, quashing speculation linking him with a move away from the French club. The 24-year-old forward, who left Manchester United permanently in July 2024 for a reported fee of £27 million, is finishing his second campaign in Ligue 1.

Greenwood was named in Ligue 1's Team of the Year on Monday after an impressive individual season, scoring 16 goals and providing six assists in 31 appearances for Marseille, who currently sit sixth in the table. However, the team's recent dip in form has drawn criticism, including from former France international Christophe Dugarry, who branded Greenwood's performances 'shameful' and 'pathetic'.

Despite links with Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, and Atletico Madrid, Greenwood is determined to stay at the Stade Velodrome and help the club improve. 'This season has been difficult at times for us as a team, especially in the last few months,' Greenwood admitted at Monday's awards ceremony. 'But, individually, I think I've had a good season. There are some incredible players in this Team of the Year, so it's nice for me to get this award. Ligue 1 is an amazing league. We play some incredible games and, to my mind, it's one of the best leagues I have played in. I hope I will be able to stay put here.'

Marseille need to beat Rennes in their final match on Sunday to qualify for the Conference League, a target that has become more challenging after recent poor results. Greenwood remains under contract with Marseille for another three seasons, but his future has been a topic of debate following Dugarry's outburst on the Rothen s'enflamme podcast. Dugarry, who played for Marseille between 1998 and 2000, said: 'You are the leader of this team, everyone depends on you. When you're not there, everyone feels your absence. And what do you give back after all those sacrifices? This? You're a disgrace, get out. That's the money you'll make for the club, but no one will cry for you. What he did against Nantes is shameful. I saw him walking around. At times I just looked at him and he was pretending. He doesn't care.'

Greenwood left Manchester United in 2024 after a prolonged absence from the pitch. He had not played for the Premier League club since January 2022, following his arrest on charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. Those charges were dropped in February 2023. Despite the controversy, Greenwood has continued his career in France, and his recent form has earned him recognition in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year.
