Pep Guardiola Condemns Fans for Booing Ramadan Stoppage in Premier League Clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has strongly criticised supporters who booed a brief stoppage during Saturday's Premier League match against Leeds United, which was implemented to allow Muslim players observing Ramadan to break their fast. The incident occurred at Elland Road, where City secured a 1-0 victory, with play paused in the 13th minute as the sun set.

Stoppage Protocol and Fan Reaction

The pause was pre-agreed by both team captains before the fixture, in line with Premier League protocols established in 2021. A message displayed on the stadium's big screen explained: "As tonight's match takes place during the holy period of Ramadan, play has been paused briefly to allow players to break their fast." Despite this, a section of Leeds fans responded with jeers and boos as players moved to the touchline.

Guardiola addressed the issue post-match, urging respect for religious diversity. "It is a modern world, right?" he stated. "[You see] what is happening in the world today. Respect religion, diversity, that is the point. The Premier League says you can have one or two minutes for the [fasting] players to do it. It is what it is, unfortunately."

Support from Anti-Racism Charity

Anti-racism charity Kick It Out issued a statement expressing disappointment over the fan reaction. They emphasised that the stoppage protocol has been in place for several years to make football more inclusive for Muslim players and communities. "It's an important and visible part of making the game welcoming," the charity noted, adding that "football still has a long way to go in terms of education and acceptance."

Background on Ramadan and Premier League Policy

Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, involves fasting from dawn to sunset. The Premier League introduced these stoppages in 2021 to accommodate players needing to replenish nutrients during matches. This season's Ramadan began recently and will conclude on the evening of Thursday, March 19, with several other Premier League fixtures expected to include similar pauses.

Guardiola highlighted the practical necessity, mentioning players like Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri who had not eaten all day. "We took on a little bit of vitamins because they did not eat today. No more than that. The question is, can they do it or not? What is the problem?" he questioned, reinforcing the call for tolerance and understanding in the sport.
