Aston Villa Plot £50m January Move for Brentford Striker Igor Thiago

Aston Villa are reportedly preparing a surprise £50 million bid for Brentford striker Igor Thiago in the January transfer window. Manager Unai Emery views the Brazilian as a long-term replacement for Ollie Watkins, who joined Villa from Brentford in 2020.

Thiago, 24, joined Brentford from Club Brugge for £30 million in 2024 but missed last season through injury. He has been in outstanding form this campaign, scoring 10 goals in 13 appearances before Saturday's match against Burnley.

Emery had been keen to sign a forward since last summer but has not yet secured a like-for-like replacement for Jhon Duran, who left in January. Watkins, who turns 30 next month, has scored only once in 17 games this season, raising concerns about his form.

Brentford are reluctant to lose Thiago, who has attracted interest from Brazil's national team. Bees boss Thomas Frank revealed that Selecao chiefs have made contact. "He's a joy to coach and be around," Frank said. "There's been contact from Brazil. They're very aware of his qualities and it's a big dream for him."

Thiago's dream is to play for Brazil at the World Cup, and Frank believes his current form could earn him a call-up. Villa may test Brentford's resolve with a £50 million bid in January.
