Italy Miss Third Straight World Cup After Bosnia Penalty Loss

Italy have failed to qualify for a third consecutive men's World Cup after losing a penalty shootout to Bosnia and Herzegovina in their playoff final. The 2026 tournament will be the third in a row without the four-time champions, following defeats to North Macedonia in 2022 and Sweden in 2018.

Despite taking an early lead through Moise Kean, Italy were outplayed by a vibrant Bosnia side who dominated possession and chances. Alessandro Bastoni's sending-off just before half-time compounded Italy's woes, and Haris Tabakovic equalised in the 79th minute to force extra time. Bosnia held firm and converted all four of their penalties to win the shootout 4-0.

Italy manager Gennaro Gattuso described the result as 'difficult to digest' and apologised for the nation's continued absence from the World Cup. 'They surprised me even today with the heart they showed,' he said of his players. 'But we are talking about the umpteenth time we aren't going to the World Cup. I personally apologise for that.'

Bosnia's performance was electric, with Sergej Barbarez's side creating numerous chances and deserving their place at the tournament. They had previously beaten Wales on penalties in the semi-final, showing resilience that carried them through against Italy.
