Juan Mata, 38, Wins A-League Player of the Year

Juan Mata, at 38 years old, has been named the A-League Men's player of the year, winning the prestigious Johnny Warren medal after a remarkable season with Melbourne Victory. The former World Cup winner, who had been written off by many, delivered a standout performance that earned him the league's highest individual honour.

A Season of Redemption

Mata's journey in Australia began with a difficult stint at Western Sydney Wanderers, where he struggled for playing time and managed only 582 minutes across the season. However, Melbourne Victory saw his potential and signed him, providing a platform for his resurgence. Deployed in a prominent attacking role, Mata played 1,684 minutes, scoring five goals and assisting 13 others, leading Victory to the elimination final where they narrowly lost to Sydney FC.

Reigniting a Passion for Football

Reflecting on his award, Mata admitted he had questioned his future at the start of the season. "There is a time in your career where you start getting older and sometimes it takes more effort to get up in the morning," he said. "But Melbourne Victory appeared and again I fell in love with football." He praised the club for creating an environment where he could thrive, calling it "a privilege to be part of this."

Uncertain Future

Despite his success, Mata remains undecided about his playing future. Out of contract, he plans to return to Europe to consider his options. "That's the big question for me now, what I want to do in my life – if I want to keep playing or not," he said. "It's difficult to stop when you're enjoying. It's also a good time to stop when things are going well." He expressed gratitude to Melbourne Victory and the league, promising to make a decision over a Melbourne coffee.
