Jurgen Klopp has explained why he did not return to Liverpool management after leaving the club in 2024. The German, who spent nearly nine years at Anfield, said he wanted to avoid 'jinxing' Liverpool's Premier League title triumph and did not wish to create 'wrong expectations'.
Klopp was back on Merseyside for a charity match between Liverpool Legends and Borussia Dortmund Legends, which ended 2-2. He served as assistant manager to Kenny Dalglish, with Thiago Alcantara and Jay Spearing scoring for the Reds.
Speaking about his return, Klopp said: 'When I left here I didn't know how often I would come back. First year I didn't want to jinx it, now I didn't want to create wrong expectations or whatever. There's always a reason not to, but this was great.'
The 58-year-old, now Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull GmbH, has been linked with managerial roles at Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. However, he dismissed talk of a move to Real Madrid, stating: 'If Real Madrid had phoned, we would have heard about it by now. But that's all nonsense.'
Klopp added that he is 'not completely finished' as a coach, saying: 'Who knows what will happen in the coming years? But there's nothing planned.'
