New York Knicks supporters are growing anxious about their travel arrangements should their team advance to the NBA Finals, as a planned shutdown of Penn Station threatens to cause significant disruption. The Knicks are just one series away from the championship round after sweeping the Philadelphia 76ers to secure a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals against either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Detroit Pistons.
If they triumph over either opponent, they will reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999, a historic achievement for the franchise and its fanbase. However, eagle-eyed fans who have already started planning for the occasion have discovered that major travel headaches could be on the horizon.
As previously announced, New Yorkers will be barred from entering certain sections of Penn Station, the busiest transportation hub in North America, during the World Cup this summer. In anticipation of the eight matches to be held at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, including the final, Penn Station will reportedly be accessible only to fans attending those games.
The train station, situated in the heart of Manhattan, serves as a vital gateway for spectators traveling from the city to the Meadowlands. Consequently, for four hours before each match and three hours after, Penn Station will be closed to everyone except World Cup ticket holders.
This presents a major worry for Knicks fans, given the potential overlap with the NBA Finals. Currently, the first two World Cup matches in New Jersey are scheduled for June 13 and 16, which coincide with the dates for Game 5 and Game 6 of the NBA Finals. Should the Knicks advance that far, one of those games would be held at Madison Square Garden.
One supporter who spotted the looming conflict took to X (formerly Twitter) to alert others. On Thursday, they wrote: 'Penn Station being shut down to NJ Transit riders from 5pm to 8pm on the night of Game 6 of the NBA Finals is nightmare fuel stuff for Jersey-based Knicks fans.'
On June 13, Brazil is scheduled to face Morocco at MetLife, followed by France versus Senegal on June 16 at the same venue. While some fans are concerned about potential travel chaos, others are downplaying the likelihood of the Knicks reaching the Finals. The team has just secured its place in the Eastern Conference Finals and must overcome either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Detroit Pistons to progress. From there, they could face the Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, or San Antonio Spurs.
