Dagenham & Redbridge supporters are cautiously optimistic after YouTuber KSI and former England striker Andy Carroll invested in the National League South club. The team, currently in the sixth tier for the first time since 2000, has had a turbulent recent history with previous investors failing to deliver on promises.
KSI, real name Olajide Olatunji, attended a recent home win against league leaders Dorking alongside Carroll, who is registered as a player but has been injured since December. The 32-year-old YouTuber, rapper, boxer and Britain's Got Talent judge aims to take the club to the Premier League, though some fans remain sceptical after past disappointments.
Long-time supporter Suzanne Collier, who has followed the club for 43 years, said: 'We hopefully will bring in a younger, London-based fanbase.' Another fan, Liam Roberts, noted increased recognition: 'You can be walking down the street in a Dagenham kit and people go: Oh, I know what that is because KSI's got that kit.'
The club has seen a series of underwhelming investors, including Club Underdog, which oversaw relegation last season, and Egyptian influencer Marwan Serry, who withdrew within five days after controversial social media posts emerged. A proposed Qatari takeover also fell through.
New ownership under Happy Fan Group, led by American businessman John Grabowski, has brought stability. Former captain Anwar Uddin has returned as non-executive chair, which fans view as a positive step. The club will feature in a documentary series titled Race to the Top on KSI's YouTube channel, modelled after Wrexham's success with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Despite the hype, Dagenham currently sit nine points off the playoffs after a 1-0 defeat at Enfield Town, a fan-owned club struggling for survival. Supporters hope the celebrity investment will translate into on-pitch success, but remain wary after past false dawns.
