Frank Lampard is preparing to overhaul his Coventry City squad after securing Premier League promotion. The Sky Blues drew 1-1 with Blackpool on Friday night, earning enough points to clinch a top-tier spot for the first time in 25 years.
An 84th-minute equaliser from Bobby Thomas sparked celebrations. Lampard, emotional after the final whistle, compared the achievement to winning the Champions League with Chelsea. 'This is a special night for the football club,' he said. 'Winning the Champions League was the best night of my life, but this comes very, very close.'
Promotion will boost Coventry's finances by around £100m from Premier League revenue, plus an additional £11m if they win the Championship title. Lampard is expected to use these funds to strengthen his squad.
Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka, who joined on loan in January with an obligation to buy upon promotion, looks set to become the first permanent signing. The Nigerian, valued at around £6m, has been instrumental in the promotion push.
Lampard has also been linked with Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry, an 18-year-old winger who made his senior debut this season. However, Lampard dismissed the rumours as 'definitely not true as a fact'. Other targets include Aston Villa's Ross Barkley and Sunderland's Dan Neil.
