Frank Leboeuf Brands Chelsea Boss's Note-Passing 'Insane' in PSG Defeat

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has launched a scathing attack on head coach Liam Rosenior, labelling his decision to pass a note to Alejandro Garnacho during the final minutes of their Champions League exit as 'insane'. The incident occurred as Chelsea suffered a heavy 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, with the tie long since decided.

Champions League Collapse Against PSG

Chelsea faced a monumental task heading into the second leg at Stamford Bridge, trailing 5-2 from the first encounter. Any faint hopes of a remarkable comeback were swiftly extinguished when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola struck within the opening 14 minutes, putting PSG 2-0 up on the night. The reigning champions added a third goal through substitute Senny Mayulu in the 62nd minute, extending their aggregate lead to an insurmountable 8-2.

Despite the contest being well beyond Chelsea's reach, Rosenior was observed passing a handwritten note to winger Alejandro Garnacho in the 84th minute, while defender Trevoh Chalobah received treatment for an injury. This bizarre tactical intervention has sparked widespread criticism from pundits and former players alike.

Leboeuf's Furious Reaction

Leboeuf, who won five major honours during his illustrious Chelsea career between 1996 and 2001, took direct aim at Rosenior for issuing instructions when the match was already over. The 1998 World Cup winner with France claimed the note was 'completely useless' and suggested the coach was merely attempting to make a show for spectators.

'I would've gone to the touchline and asked if it was a joke or are you kidding? You think the things I read will be useful right now?' Leboeuf told ESPN. 'It doesn't mean anything, maybe he was writing a joke. The funny thing is the guy who received it was looking for another player to give him instructions.'

He added, 'Maybe the player he was talking about was already substituted, we don't know. Maybe he lost his mind, that was insane. He's not the only one to do those kinds of things. I don't know what the new coaches from the new era are trying to show us, we know it's completely useless.'

Capello Joins the Criticism

Leboeuf was not alone in questioning Rosenior's peculiar approach. Former Real Madrid and England manager Fabio Capello also voiced his disapproval, suggesting Chelsea players would be laughing at their manager's actions.

'He's out of his mind,' Capello stated, as reported by Football Italia. 'He did something that will make the players laugh. That's what they think. You saw his [Garnacho's] face when he entered the pitch with that note; he was like: "What are you saying to me?" When you do smart things, you are involved, but when you do something like that, how are you involving somebody?'

Pressure Mounts on Rosenior

This incident adds to a growing spell of pressure for Rosenior, who was appointed on a substantial six-and-a-half year contract back in January. Chelsea's Champions League elimination to PSG represents their joint heaviest defeat in a two-legged European tie, compounding a difficult period for the club.

The European exit was sandwiched by a damaging 1-0 Premier League loss to Newcastle United on Saturday, which severely dented Chelsea's hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League. That match was also marred by controversy, as Chelsea's first team staged a pre-match huddle around referee Paul Tierney, drawing further scrutiny.

Currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, Rosenior's side will aim to rebound with a victory over Everton this Saturday before the international break. Attention will then turn to the FA Cup, where a quarter-final clash against Port Vale now represents Chelsea's sole remaining opportunity to secure silverware this season.
