Barcelona Star Lewandowski Questions Manchester United's Handling of Rashford
Robert Lewandowski has openly discussed why he believes his Barcelona team-mate Marcus Rashford has rediscovered his top form since leaving Manchester United. The Polish striker, speaking to Sky Sports, emphasised that Rashford thrives on confidence and support, implying that United's management may have failed to provide this adequately.
"Marcus is the guy, if you give him confidence and he sees that you believe in him, he can give you back 200 per cent," Lewandowski stated. "He's a very nice guy. We spoke because we are sitting in the dressing room beside [each other]. We also play ping-pong."
Lewandowski added, "I see that this guy is very kind, very nice guy but also because of this he needs someone standing behind him. If he does have this confidence he can really play his best football and on the best level. He has huge potential. He has everything. He has speed, he has technique, he has a shot, he has left foot, right foot, skills."
Rashford's Loan Spell and Future Prospects
Rashford, aged 28, last played for Manchester United in December 2024 and has impressed during his loan spell at Barcelona. The Spanish club holds an option to sign the England international permanently for £26 million, a move that seems increasingly likely given his resurgence. This development comes as Manchester United face an extended break due to their early FA Cup exit, allowing manager Michael Carrick time to reflect on recent performances.
Patrice Evra Condemns Criticism from Manchester United Legends
Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has expressed bewilderment over the negative reactions from club icons following the team's loss to Newcastle. This defeat marked the first setback of Michael Carrick's tenure, ending a remarkable run of six wins in seven games that had propelled United into Champions League contention.
Evra specifically targeted Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, and Gary Neville for their comments. "I hope Paul Scholes' Instagram story is fake," Evra told gambling website Stake. "I hope he was hacked. To be honest, I'm not surprised at that from Scholesy. He was the quietest player I've ever played with in my entire career. Now, in the media, he drops bombshells."
He continued, "I really don't understand the lack of support behind Michael Carrick, he's one of us and he's doing very well. There's been negative analysis from Scholesy, but also from Roy Keane and Gary Neville. It annoys me because we want to be in the top four, and those comments are unnecessary, but this is what you do when you work in TV. You can't be positive, you have to be negative."
Carrick's Focus on Upcoming Crucial Match
With Manchester United not in action until next weekend, Carrick is diligently working to address the mistakes from the Newcastle loss. The team is currently level on points with Aston Villa, their next opponents, but sits above them on goal difference. This match is pivotal for maintaining their top-four ambitions in the Premier League.
The extended break provides a valuable opportunity for tactical adjustments and player recovery. Carrick's ability to rally the squad after this setback will be closely watched, especially as external criticism from former stars adds pressure. The manager's focus remains on ensuring his side is well-prepared to secure a positive result against Villa.
Meanwhile, Rashford's success at Barcelona highlights ongoing discussions about player management and development at Old Trafford. Lewandowski's insights suggest that a more supportive environment could unlock similar performances from other talents within the United squad.
