Liverpool have suffered a significant blow in their pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, who has reportedly verbally agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain. The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international has emerged as one of Europe's brightest young talents, and his potential move to PSG would leave Liverpool scrambling for alternatives to replace Mohamed Salah.
Diomande's Stellar Season
In his debut campaign in Germany, Diomande scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in 36 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig. His performances earned him the Bundesliga Young Player of the Season award, attracting interest from top clubs including Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and PSG. Despite being under contract until 2030, the winger could be on the move after just one season.
PSG Take the Lead
According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Diomande has agreed to join PSG, where he would bolster an already formidable attack featuring Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and Bradley Barcola. However, reports suggest Diomande remains interested in Liverpool but not Bayern Munich. The next hurdle for any suitor is agreeing a fee with Leipzig, who are demanding north of £100 million.
Leipzig's Valuation
ESPN reports that Leipzig have slapped a €130 million (£112 million) price tag on their star player. Having signed Diomande from Leganes for just €20 million (£17 million) last July, the German club are in a strong negotiating position. They may also attempt to extend his contract on improved terms to fend off interest, while a legal dispute between his former and current representatives adds further complexity.
Diomande's Comments
Speaking last month, Diomande downplayed speculation about his future. "My contract here is until 2030, so I have four more years. What's going to happen afterwards? I don't know. I am a Leipzig player," he said. "I will never forget this opportunity. The club helped me a lot off the pitch, with my family and my mom. The only thing I can do is give everything on the pitch."
He added: "Nobody knew me before, and €20 million is a lot. It was a big risk for them, and I thank them for that. We are on a good path, and it's not over. We need to keep working hard."
Liverpool's Search for Salah's Replacement
Liverpool are actively searching for a right-winger to fill the void left by Mohamed Salah, who departed after nine prolific years. Diomande had been identified as a prime target, but PSG's apparent agreement with the player has put the Reds at a disadvantage. With Leipzig demanding a massive fee, Liverpool may need to explore other options in the transfer market.
