Harry Maguire has candidly revealed that he believed his international career with England was finished, only to stage a dramatic comeback into the squad as the World Cup approaches. After a turbulent three-year period at Manchester United, which saw him omitted from the Euro 2024 tournament, the defender is now poised to fight for a spot in the upcoming global competition.
The Emotional Recall
Maguire described a nerve-wracking 40-minute flight to Bournemouth after receiving a WhatsApp message from England manager Thomas Tuchel, just before Manchester United's Premier League match. Tuchel was contacting key players ahead of announcing the 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. Maguire admitted that if he had missed this selection, he felt his remarkable England journey would have ended permanently.
"When I received the text I was just about to take off," Maguire recounted. "I didn't know if he was ringing me up and saying you've just missed out. I knew if I missed this camp I don't think I would have been back in the England set-up." The uncertainty made the short flight feel interminable, but the outcome was a heartfelt reunion with the national team.
Family Reactions and Personal Reflections
The news brought tears of joy, particularly from Maguire's mother, who called him crying while on holiday in Spain. "My mum rang me up crying, bless her," he shared. "She was in Spain on holidays with my nephew and she rang me up crying. I don't know how many drinks she'd had!" This emotional response underscored the deep passion Maguire holds for representing his country, a dream he never abandoned even during his international absence and challenging times at Old Trafford.
Reflecting on his journey, Maguire compared the recall to his first call-up, despite having earned over 60 caps and participated in three major tournaments. "It felt a bit like my first call-up really," he said. "When you're in the moment and you're playing every game for England... you don't want to say you take it for granted but you get comfortable with the set-up. And then when it's taken away from you all of a sudden, it hurts."
Overcoming Doubts and Shifting Focus
At 33 years old, Maguire acknowledged a moment of doubt about his England future, especially after being left out of the summer camp last season. However, his perspective has evolved towards team success rather than individual accolades. "I'm in a position now in my career where it is not so much about myself, not so much about the individual," he explained. "I am just about the team now, helping the team move forward and to win something."
He emphasized his commitment to England's success, regardless of his playing time at the World Cup. "If I play one minute at the World Cup or every game of the World Cup, I will still do everything I can to make sure this country is successful," Maguire stated, highlighting his role both on and off the pitch.
Confidence and Competition
Despite facing competition from defenders like Ezri Konsa, John Stones, and Marc Guehi, Maguire remains confident in his abilities. He pointed to his extensive experience at Manchester United and in major tournaments as proof of his caliber. "I have great belief in myself. I'm a top-level centre back," he asserted. "You don't play seven years at Manchester United, under the scrutiny that we're under, especially in a centre-back position where every goal that you concede is analysed, scrutinised, or play for England at three major tournaments... without having the belief that you deserve to be there."
Addressing past form dips, Maguire noted that his performance has been consistently high for about three years, aside from a six to nine-month period of struggle. "I feel like my form for Manchester United, probably for three years now, has been at a high level," he said, adding that he is now in a good rhythm after recent injury setbacks.
A Story of Resilience
Maguire's return to the England squad is celebrated as a feel-good narrative, marking his comeback after 18 months without a cap. From the highs of the 2018 World Cup semi-finals to the lows of Euro 2021 heartbreak and missing Euro 2024, he has endeared himself to fans nationwide. As he prepares for the World Cup, Maguire's journey symbolizes resilience and unwavering dedication, ready to contribute to England's campaign on the global stage.
