Harry Maguire's mother has voiced her fury after the Manchester United centre-back was left out of England's World Cup squad by manager Thomas Tuchel. News of Maguire's omission broke on Thursday evening, prompting the player to confirm his disappointment on social media. In an Instagram post, he wrote: "I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had. I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I've loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer."
Mother's Outrage
His mother, Zoe, did not hold back in her reaction. On X, she simply posted: "Absolutely disgusted." This comes after she had been seen crying with joy when Maguire was recalled to the England squad in March following an 18-month absence. At that time, Maguire said: "It's amazing. It's something I've missed. When you don't get picked, when you've been a regular for six or seven years, it's tough. I phoned my family. My mum was on holiday and she was crying."
Other Notable Omissions
Maguire is not the only high-profile player to miss out. Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Luke Shaw, and Morgan Gibbs-White were also left out of Tuchel's plans. The England manager is expected to explain his decisions during a press conference on Friday.
With no World Cup football this summer, Maguire will instead focus on Manchester United's pre-season tour, which includes friendlies across Europe. The Red Devils will be preparing for the upcoming campaign while England aim to end their 66-year wait for a major trophy in North America.
