Manchester United supporters have issued a stark warning to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, threatening 'outright rebellion' after the Ineos chief faced abuse following Sunday's match at Craven Cottage. The Manchester United Supporters Trust (Must) published an open letter condemning recent ticketing changes, describing the current period as 'the worst possible time' for significant price increases.
In December, matchday ticket prices were raised to £66 per game, and concessions for children and pensioners were removed. Last week, the club informed fan group The 1958 that breaches of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) were possible, hinting at further price rises due to 'not sustainable' losses. Must argued that fan discontent is poisoning the club's atmosphere and could lead to a 'catastrophic tailspin' affecting performance and revenues.
The trust proposed freezing ticket prices for members and season ticket holders next season, exploring share issues to raise funds, and allowing fan investment. They also urged the club to resist selling academy talents like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo for short-term fixes, and called for closer consultation with fan groups on key decisions.
Ratcliffe was confronted by fans after the Fulham win, with one shouting '£66… you are taking the piss' and another saying 'You're worse than the Glazers'. United currently sit 12th in the Premier League, with last season's eighth-place finish their lowest since 1990. Despite recent improvement under Ruben Amorim, the club reportedly needs to sell players to comply with PSR restrictions.
