Manchester United have been told why Patrick Dorgu's goal against Arsenal was allowed to stand despite handball claims. The Denmark international scored United's second goal in their 3-2 win at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, but there was debate over whether the ball struck his arm before crossing the line.
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher explained on Sky Sports Ref Watch that the on-field decision could not be overturned due to a lack of clear evidence. "I didn't think he handled it, but it is so hard to see," Gallagher said. "You have to be sure it has struck his arm to disallow it. Does the ball hit his hip and go forward? I think it does."
Ex-England striker Jay Bothroyd agreed, stating: "If you can't 100 per cent tell if it hits his hand, you have to give the goal." Bothroyd noted that Arsenal's Martin Zubimendi appealed immediately, being the closest player to Dorgu.
United interim head coach Michael Carrick praised Dorgu after the match, highlighting his contributions in recent games. "Pat's been a big player for us over the last couple of games," Carrick said. "The move for Pat was a really good move, and the connection through the pitch, but to finish it the way he did was some finish."
The victory lifted United into fourth place in the Premier League, overtaking Liverpool and Chelsea. Carrick has now won both matches since taking over from Ruben Amorim earlier this month.
