Manchester United will have to wait longer for the return of forward Bryan Mbeumo after his national team, Cameroon, progressed to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
AFCON Progress Delays Premier League Return
The Indomitable Lions secured a 2-1 victory over South Africa in their last-16 clash on Sunday, booking their place in the next round. This means Mbeumo's tournament involvement is extended, with Cameroon's next match scheduled for January 9 against hosts Morocco.
This fixture creates a direct club clash, as Morocco's squad includes United defender Noussair Mazraoui. Consequently, one of the two Red Devils will be eliminated after the quarter-final and could potentially return in time for the FA Cup tie against Brighton & Hove Albion on January 11. A return for the high-profile Manchester derby against City on January 17 is viewed as a more realistic target for either player.
Mbeumo's Form Under Scrutiny in Cameroon
The 26-year-old winger has struggled to find his best form during the winter tournament. While he provided an assist in the group stage against Gabon, Mbeumo has not contributed to a goal since. His performances have prompted comment from Cameroon manager David Pagou.
Prior to a group match with Mozambique, Pagou suggested the United attacker might be putting too much pressure on himself. "He's putting too much pressure on himself, but I think he will manage that," Pagou said. "He's a great footballer... He loves this team and really wants to commit to being as effective as possible."
The coach added that the team gives Mbeumo freedom to express himself across the pitch, acknowledging the player has "had some difficulties flourishing" so far in the competition.
Absences Compound United's Difficult Period
The departure of Mbeumo, Mazraoui, and Amad for the AFCON has come at a challenging time for Manchester United. Manager Ruben Amorim's squad has been ravaged by injuries to key players, with the team managing just one win in their last five matches across all competitions.
Amorim himself has publicly addressed speculation about his future, firmly stating his role at the club. Following a 1-1 draw at Leeds United, he emphasised, "I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United... And it's going to be like this for 18 months, or when the board decides to change."
With the AFCON schedule now confirmed, United's planning must account for the continued absence of vital attacking option Bryan Mbeumo, as the club seeks to navigate a packed January fixture list.
